Melissa Lee
Melissa is a designer turned nutritionist, who has combined the two modalities to create purposeful designs for various health publications and websites. Having initially studied Multimedia Systems Design, she then went on to complete a BHSc in Nutritional Medicine which led to her involvement in the integrative medicine industry and eventually to FX Medicine.

This seminar will provide an overview of cancer as the result of a confluence of multiple factors. The process of carcinogenesis will be assessed as one influenced by both extrinsic systemic conditions as well as by intrinsic cellular aberrations. Armed with this holistic understanding, practitioners will be equipped to identify individual risk factors and will have the underlying rationale for comprehensive prevention and management strategies.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the key characteristics of malignancy on genetic, epigenetic, biomolecular and the pathophysiological levels
  • Discover the role of stromal inflammation in carcinogenesis
  • Analyse the complex role of immunity and angiogenesis in carcinogenesis
  • Describe the role of insulin, glucose and metabolism in carcinogenesis
  • Analyse the role of oxidative stress in carcinogenesis with an emphasis on the contribution of environmental toxicity
  • Evaluate the impact of psychosocial stress and circadian disturbance on carcinogenesis
  • Gain familiarity with the presentation of cancer and presenting signs and symptoms that should trigger a diagnostic work-up
